The SpeedyBroz Baya Bar Smoothie Recipe Knockoff

The Speedy Broz love a good smoothie from our local Baya Bar. But at almost $12 a pop, we can only afford them every once in a while. So we wanted to share our SpeedyBroz Baya Bar Smoothie Recipe knockoff.

So we started experimenting at home to try reproducing their favorite Vanilla Protein smoothie (which is essentially the same as the Strawberry Banana smoothie but with protein powder added. And after lots of disappointing trials, we’ve finally got it very close (theirs is still better, but ours is a close second).

Healthy Options

For elite youth athletes, proper fuel is a must. We stopped eating cereal for breakfast because of the high amount of added sugar, and we can only eat so many eggs to get the protein their growing bodies need. So we love a good smoothie. They will put it in an insulated shaker and drink it on the bus and at school between classes.

We estimated these nutrition facts from the Baya Bar nutrition sheet:

Baya Bar Smoothie Recipe Knockoff

It’s important not to add the protein powder until the end, because over-blending the protein can result in a frothy mess that the kids really don’t like.

A good commercial-quality blender is clutch. We use this one from Ninja which is good, but I’m sure there are more expensive options closer to the one Baya Bar uses.

  1. Add 12 fluid ounces of Almond Milk to the blender
  2. Add 1 cup of frozen banana slices (we buy lots of bananas and then slice and freeze them when they get too ripe)
  3. Add 1 cup of frozen strawberries (we buy pre-frozen bags from the grocery)
  4. Add 1/2 a fresh banana
  5. Blend on high for “like a minute” until there are no chunks and everything looks smooth and silky (it will be very thick, so proper blending is key—don’t under-blend)

Note: if you stop here, it will be like the Strawberry Banana smoothie, but we like to add protein to make it the Vanilla Protein shake
  6. Add a full scoop of whey protein powder (or your protein of choice: even yogurt). After trying a bunch of others, we’ve settled on this vanilla-flavored whey protein from Now Sports.
  7. Optional: add a scoop of creatine powder. We use this unflavored one from Jocko.
  8. Optional: add a Tablespoon of creamy peanut butter (SpeedyPetey loves this option, but LukasHam doesn’t)
  9. Blend ON LOWEST speed just long enough to blend the powder into the smoothie. Over-blending can result in the protein becoming frothy which the Speedy Broz hate.
  10. Serve and enjoy!
